CASA DE MARIA DOCUMENTARY

Dr. Vilma Luz Cabán is the executive producer of La Casa de María: Trials & Triumphs, a documentary created in collaboration with director Joe Negrón.

DOCUMENTARY SUMMARY:

This documentary chronicles the journey of a Nuyorican daughter who returns to her mother’s ancestral homeland of Puerto Rico. The film centers on an act of devotion and resolve, as a daughter works to fulfill her mother’s final dream. As Vilma restores a family home, she seeks to preserve a legacy rooted in cultural memory and belonging.

The film follows her path as she confronts formidable challenges such as Hurricane María and a global pandemic. Through this journey, it reveals the care required to rebuild not only a home, but a sense of continuity across generations. It captures the nostalgia that Vilma carries and highlights the resilience she draws on as Vilma reclaims heritage and purpose.

The film premiered at the Bregamos Theatre and was later presented at student and community events hosted by the City University of New York at Bronx Community College.

The team plans to share the documentary with cultural centers and educational institutions that support community-based storytelling.
