A Legacy of Strength, Storytelling, and the Promise of Home

Dr. Vilma Luz Cabán brings firsthand experience as both a writer and an advocate to the publishing journey. As the author of The Heart of an Advocate, she understands the vulnerability and discipline required to shape lived experience into a book. That same clarity and care guide the way she supports writers as they move toward publication.

A Daughter's Promise

As a young girl, Vilma quietly worked alongside her mother María to save money to escape an abusive home. While her mother labored, Vilma cared for her siblings. They protected a fragile plan built on hope.

María's dream was to return to her ancestral land in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. Her goal was to build a life rooted in freedom. She diligently sent money to her brother, who was building a home on family land. María passed away from cancer before the dream could be realized. Just before her mother’s passing, Vilma made a promise to her mother. She would finish constructing her mother’s dream.

Transforming Grief into Purpose

In honor of her mother's strength and vision, Vilma resumed the construction of her mother's unfinished home. She transformed it into a place of purpose. What began as her mother's personal aspiration is now Casa de María Publisher. With a determined, hands-on spirit, Vilma completed the home in 24 months, transforming loss into legacy.

A Santuary for Storytellers

Today, Casa de María Publisher’s main office sits in the lush countryside of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. María’s ancestral home now serves as a sanctuary for writers. It is a place of reflection and renewal. Here, storytellers grow their manuscripts, refine their craft, and find community grounded in care and creativity.

As Founder and CEO, Dr. Cabán hosts in-person and virtual writing retreats, webinars, and a reflective podcast.
